Why travellers go to Bangladesh — what to expect
Bangladesh draws visitors for city life in Dhaka, rivers and delta landscapes, rural villages and seasonal festivals. Many travellers visit friends and relatives, take part in community or aid work, or travel to rural areas where rice fields, livestock and seasonal rains are common. Your activities and where you plan to spend most time — big cities, coastal areas or rural north‑western districts — determine which health risks are most relevant.
Main health risks and vaccines to consider
Routine UK vaccinations should be up to date. For Bangladesh you should consider:
Hepatitis A and typhoid: both spread through contaminated food and water; vaccination is routinely advised for most travellers.
Hepatitis B: recommended for anyone at risk from medical procedures, new sexual partners or extended stays.
Rabies: a risk across the country; pre‑exposure vaccine is sensible for long stays, work with animals, or limited access to prompt medical care.
Japanese encephalitis (JE): transmitted by night‑biting mosquitoes in rural and agricultural areas (rice fields); vaccine is considered for longer stays or rural itineraries, particularly during and after the monsoon season (June–November).
Malaria: risk is focused in the Chittagong Hill Tracts. Antimalarial tablets are recommended if you’ll be in those districts; elsewhere awareness and bite avoidance are usually advised.
Dengue, chikungunya and Zika: day‑biting mosquitoes transmit these infections. There’s no routine vaccine for dengue for those without prior infection; protection relies on repellents, clothing and mosquito nets. Pregnant travellers should seek specific advice about Zika.
Measles and other outbreaks: check recent outbreak notices and ensure MMR protection.
In addition to vaccines, good food and water hygiene, insect‑bite prevention and adequate travel insurance are important. Some vaccinations (for example JE or rabies) require multiple doses or planning, so discuss your exact itinerary with the clinician.

How to prepare before you travel
Aim to book an appointment 4–6 weeks before departure so there’s time for vaccine courses and any antimalarial planning — but it’s still worthwhile to come in later if time is short. What to expect when preparing:
Itinerary review: tell us where you’ll go, how long you’ll stay and what you’ll do (cities, rural areas, work with animals, visiting friends and relatives).
Timing for medicines: antimalarials have different start times (some begin 1–2 days before travel, others several weeks) — your pharmacist will advise the right option.
Vaccine schedules: some vaccines need one visit, others a series — we’ll explain what’s required for your trip.
Practical prevention: guidance on insect repellent (DEET or icaridin options), bed nets, safe food and water choices, and how to reduce animal contact.
Bring details of your medical history and any current medications. If you’re pregnant, breastfeeding, or have specific health conditions, we’ll tailor recommendations to keep you and your baby safe.
