Why Iran matters for travel health planning
Iran mixes big cities, high-altitude regions and warm southern provinces — each brings different health considerations. City tourism usually carries routine risks such as seasonal flu or foodborne illness. Travelling to remote or rural areas, working with animals, or staying for longer periods increases exposure to infections like rabies, hepatitis B and, in some areas, mosquito-borne viruses. Knowing where in Iran you’ll go and what activities you’ll do helps us give straightforward, practical advice and the right vaccinations.
Main health risks and recommended vaccines for Iran
Key prevention points to consider: - Routine vaccines: Make sure you are up to date with UK routine immunisations (MMR, tetanus and polio). A tetanus booster is sensible if your last dose was over ten years ago and you could face limited medical care abroad.
Hepatitis A: Recommended for most travellers because it spreads through contaminated food or water.
Hepatitis B: Consider for those who might have new sexual partners, need medical or dental care, plan a long stay, or work in healthcare or with blood.
Typhoid and cholera: These are linked to food and water hygiene. Typhoid vaccination is worth considering for travel to areas with poor sanitation; cholera vaccination is reserved for higher-risk travellers or outbreak situations.
Rabies: Rabies is present in animals. Pre-exposure vaccine is advised for long-stay travellers, those working with animals, or people likely to be far from prompt medical care — it simplifies post‑exposure treatment.
Mosquito-borne viruses: Dengue has been reported in parts of Iran; mosquito bite prevention matters in towns and rural areas. Malaria risk is generally low but exists seasonally in specific south‑eastern and northern border areas (usually March–November). For most short-stay travellers to low‑risk areas, bite avoidance is the priority; antimalarial tablets are considered for travel to higher-risk zones or for vulnerable travellers.
Other risks: MERS has occurred in the region, air pollution can be an issue in some cities, and there is a very low reported risk of schistosomiasis from freshwater exposure.
Practical prevention (safe food and water, insect bite avoidance, avoiding animal contact) makes a big difference.

How to prepare before you travel
Start planning at least four to six weeks before departure — earlier if you have complex health needs. What to do next:
Book a vaccination and advice appointment so any multi-dose vaccines can be completed in time. If time is tight, an appointment is still useful.
Check routine immunisations and get a tetanus booster if appropriate.
Ask about hepatitis A and B, typhoid and rabies depending on your itinerary and activities.
Discuss malaria only if you’ll visit known risk areas; if antimalarials are advised we’ll explain options and timing.
Reduce insect bites: use an effective repellent (DEET or picaridin), wear long sleeves at dawn/dusk, and sleep under a net if needed.
Food and water safety: stick to bottled or treated water, avoid raw street food, and use hand hygiene.
Travel insurance and documents: ensure you have cover for medical care and bring a list of current medicines and vaccination records.
