What is meningococcal disease and why it matters to travellers
Meningococcal disease is a serious bacterial infection that can cause meningitis (infection of the lining around the brain) and septicaemia (blood infection). It’s caused by Neisseria meningitidis, which exists in several groups — A, B, C, W, X and Y are the most important. The bacteria spread in respiratory droplets during close or prolonged contact, so crowded settings, shared accommodation or mass gatherings increase the chance of spread. Although cases are rare for most travellers, the illness can progress quickly and lead to long-term complications, so prevention through vaccination is an important consideration for many trips.
About the ACWY vaccine — who needs it and what to expect
The ACWY vaccine protects against four main meningococcal groups (A, C, W and Y). It’s commonly recommended for:
Pilgrims travelling for Hajj or Umrah (a valid ACWY certificate is required for Saudi entry)
Travellers to the ‘meningitis belt’ of sub‑Saharan Africa or to areas with a known outbreak
Long‑stay travellers, healthcare workers or those visiting friends and relatives abroad
People with certain medical conditions (for example, absent or not working spleen, some immune deficiencies)
Timing: we normally give the ACWY vaccine at least 10 days before travel so the certificate is valid for visa checks and the body has time to respond. If you expect ongoing exposure (for example repeat pilgrimages or prolonged stays in high‑risk areas), a booster every five years is commonly advised for continuing protection.
Minimum age and vaccine options: different ACWY products have different age authorisations — some can be used from infancy and others from older than one or two years. We’ll check the right product for the traveller’s age and health.
Safety: ACWY vaccines are well established. Common side effects are mild and include pain or redness at the injection site, headache, tiredness and occasionally fever. Vaccination should be delayed if someone has a significant fever or a known severe allergy to a vaccine ingredient; we’ll review suitability during your appointment.
Where the ACWY vaccine is most relevant
ACWY vaccination is most commonly advised for travel to the extended meningitis belt of sub‑Saharan Africa, where seasonal outbreaks occur, and for travellers attending mass gatherings such as the Hajj. It may also be recommended when a specific outbreak is reported anywhere in the world — public health guidance sometimes changes depending on local strains and current cases. If your trip involves close contact with local communities, long stays, or crowded accommodation, ACWY is more likely to be recommended. If you’re unsure, bring your itinerary and dates to a clinic appointment and we’ll make a clear, destination‑specific recommendation.
