What typhoid is, how it spreads and why travellers should care
Typhoid (enteric fever) is caused by bacteria that get into the body through contaminated food or water. Symptoms can include prolonged fever, stomach pain, headache and diarrhoea, and in some cases the illness needs medical treatment in hospital. The risk is highest in places with limited sanitation — for example the Indian subcontinent, parts of Southeast Asia, much of sub‑Saharan Africa and sections of Central and South America. Even short trips can expose travellers, so awareness and basic food-and-water hygiene are important alongside vaccination.
About the typhoid vaccine: options, who it’s for and timing
There are two main types of typhoid vaccine used in the UK: an injectable (single‑dose Vi vaccine) and an oral capsule course. The injectable vaccine is licensed for children from 2 years of age and adults; the oral vaccine is generally for people aged 5 and over. Both give protection that lasts around three years, after which a booster dose is usually advised if you remain at risk. Ideally allow time for the vaccine to work before travel — the injection is best given at least 2 weeks before departure, and the oral course must be completed at least one week beforehand. We’ll talk through suitability and any medical considerations, such as pregnancy, age or existing health conditions, at your appointment.
Where typhoid vaccination is recommended
Typhoid vaccination is most commonly recommended for travellers to countries where typhoid is common or where sanitation and clean water are unreliable. This includes much of South Asia (for example India, Pakistan, Bangladesh), parts of Southeast Asia, many countries in sub‑Saharan Africa and some areas of Central and South America. Vaccination is considered alongside your itinerary, length of stay and planned activities — eating street food or travelling to rural areas increases risk. If you’re passing through these regions or visiting friends and family, mention your exact destinations so we can give tailored advice.
